Bijayananda Patnaik (Biju Patnaik), one of the makers of modern Orissa and former Chief Minister of Orissa was born on 5th March of 1916. Being a graduate in science he travelled many countries such as USA, UK, USSR, Indonesia, Paris and many more. Being an industrialist and a world famous pilot he was very fond of adventure life; that brought Indonesian Prime Minister Mr. Sultan Siharir to New Delhi by plane during the Indonesian Freedom Struggle and was the first Indian to land plane on Kashmir.

  • Participate in Quit-India Movement and imprisoned for thirty months;
  • 1952: Elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Jagannath Prasad of Ganjam;
  • 1957: Elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Surada of Ganjam;
  • 1961: Elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Choudwar of Cuttack;
  • 23-06-1961 to 02-10-1963: Became Chief Minister of Orissa;
  • 1971: Elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Rajnagar of Cuttack;
  • 1971 to June 1972: Became Chairman for Planning Board of Orissa;
  • 1974: Elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Rajnagar of Cuttack;
  • 1977: Elected to Parliament;
  • 1977 to 1979: Became Cabinet Minister of the Central Ministry;
  • 1980: Elected to Lok Sabha from Kendrapada Constituency;
  • 1984: Elected to Lok Sabha from Kendrapada Parliamentary Constituency;
  • 1985: Elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly from Bhubaneswar Assembly Constituency;
  • 1990: Formed Janata Dal party and secured more than three fourth majority in Orissa Legislative Assembly;
  • 05-03-1990 to 15-03-1995: Became Chief Minister of Orissa;
  • 1995, March: Elected from Bhubaneswar Assembly Constituency;
  • 1996, June: Elected for Lok Sabha Assembly from Aska of Ganjam and Cuttack; resigned from Orissa Legislative Assembly and became a Member of Parliament from Aska Lok Sabha Constituency;
  • 1997, 17th April: Breathed last at Escort Hospital, New Delhi.
