Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, one of the makers of Modern Orissa was born on 21st November of 1899 to the father Krushna Charan Das and Mother Tohapha Debi at Agarpada of undivided Balasore district. He was the last Prime Minister before Independent of Orissa and also one of the Chief Ministers of freedom Orissa. In his lifetime he completely vowed himself for the freedom of India and has been jailed several times by the Britons. He is the one who founded Bhubaneswar as the capital and multi purpose Hirakud  Dam Project.


Biography of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, year wise:

  • 1921: Joined National Liberation Movement;
  • 1922: First imprisoned by Britons due to provocating to revolution;
  • 1923: Started Odia weekly, ‘Prajatantra’ from Balasore;
  • 1924: Became member of Bihar and Orissa Council;
  • 1930: Joined Salt Movement and imprisoned;
  • 1934: Started Harijan Movement in Orissa;
  • 1938: Became the President of State People’s Enquire Committee;
  • 1941: Joined Non Cooperation Movement and imprisoned;
  • 1942: Joined Quit India Movement and imprisoned;
  • 23-04-1946 to 12-05-1950: Became Prime Minister of Orissa;
  • 1950-1952: Became Union Minister of Commerce and Industry;
  • 1952: Elected as Secretary General to the Congress Party in Parliament;
  • 1955-1956: Became the Governor of Bombay (Maharastra);
  • 19-10-1956 to 25-02-1961: Became Chief Minister of Orissa;
  • 1962: Elected to Lok Sabha;
  • 1967: Elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly;
  • 1971: Elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly;
  • 1974: Elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly.

In His lifetime, He owned many awards and degrees from diverse sectors. Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab is the founder of Prajatantra Prachar Samiti which publishes the Odia daily ‘Prajatantra’ and monthly journal ‘Jhankar’. He is a writer, novelist, poet and a famous editor of his time. His famous writings are ‘History of Orissa’, and ‘Beginning of the End’. He received the Central Sahitya Academy Award in 1983 for his popular column ‘Gaon Majlis’ in his Odia daily ‘Prajatantra’.

For several times Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab was the President of Orissa Sahitya Academy and Sangit Natak Academy. He was the lifetime member of Utkal University Senate; from where he conferred Doctorate Degree in Literature also. He bestowed with Honorary Degree of Doctor by Andhra University and Doctor of Laws by Sagar University. God rested his soul on 2nd January, 1987.
