Pundit Nilakantha Das, one of the comrades of ‘Pancha Sakha’ of ‘Satyabadi Era’ was born on 5th of August 1884 in the village Sri Ramchandrapur of Puri district. The Panch Sakha of Satyabadi Era consists of Pundit Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, Acharya Harihar Das, Pundit Godavarish Mishra and Pundit Krupasindhu Mishra along with Pundit Nilakantha Das that aims to serve the society independently, not binding with any kind of government services. He was the recipient of Kendra Sahitya Academy for Odia literature for his Autobiography 'Atmajibani' in the year 1964.

Biography of Pundit Nilakantha Das year wise:

  • 1899: Admitted to Puri Zilla School;
  • 1909: Passed Bachelor of Arts;
  • 1911: Completed M.A.B.L. from Calcutta University and joined Satyabadi School as a teacher and then became Headmaster;
  • In between, he joined non-cooperation movement and elected as a working member of Utkal Pradesh Congress Committee and also to All India Congress Committee.
  • Edited a newspaper from Sambalpur, named ‘Seba’;
  • 1922: Arrested by Britons due to Anti-British activities and jailed for six months at Hajaribagh jail.
  • 1923: Elected as a member of Central Assembly in assistance of Utkalamani Pundit Gopabandhu Das;
  • 1926: Participated in Shimla Conference;
  • 1928: Took the headship of Congress in Orissa after the death of Utkalamani Pundit Gopabandhu Das;
  • Resigned from Central Assembly at Lahore Congress and jailed for six months after joining the Salt Movement;
  • He then began untouchable movement and served the people of sub grade and lower castes;
  • 1933: Edited a monthly Odia magazine ‘Naba Bharat
  • 1934: Arranged first of tour of Mahatma Gandhi to Orissa;
  • 1936: Orissa became a separate state and elected as the President of P.C.C.;
  • Utkal University was established under his chairmanship;
  • 1951: Elected to Orissa Legislative Assembly with his new named party ‘Swadhin Jana Sangha’;
  • 1955: Joined Congress with the request of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru;
  • 1957, May: Elected as a Speaker of Orissa Legislative Assembly and remain up to July 1961
  • On 6th November 1967: Pundit Nilakantha Das rested completely.
