Shri Nabakrishna Choudhury,the ex-Chief Minister of Orissa was born on 22nd November 1901 to late Gokulananda Choudhury of Kherash of Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack. Joined Non Co-operation movement in the year 1921, while studying in Bachelor of Arts at Ravenshaw College. He is one of the founder members of ‘Bharati Mandir’ an Organization of Educated Youth for Cultural and Political Independence. He joined Sabarmati Ashram of Bapu and stayed there for two years.

Biography of Shri Nabakrishna Choudhury, year wise:

  • 1926: Went to Shantiniketan for studies;
  • 1927: Married to Malati Debi;
  • 1930: Participated in Salt Satyagrah;
  • 1937-1956: As a founder of Congress Socialist Party of India, elected as a member of Orissa Legislative Assembly. During which he was imprisoned due to participation in Eastern Princely States (Gadajat) of Dhenkanal and Talcher, Civil Disobedience and Quit India Movements;
  • 1947: Became President of Orissa Land Reforms Committee; but later he resigned from the post and became an Organizer of Basic Education in Orissa;
  • 1947-48: Became Minister of Revenue, Supply and Transport; nationalized the passenger’s transport system;
  • 12-05-1950 to 19-10-1956: Became Chief Minister of Orissa; endorsed the Grama Panchayat Act, Zamidari Abolition Act and Orissa Tenants Protection Act;
  • 1956: Joined Sarvodaya Movement and became President of Sarba Seba Sangha where he worked for the backward people;
  • 1974-1977: Joined J.P’s Movement;
  • 1984, 24th June: Shri Nabakrishna Choudhury breathed last.
