Utkalamani Pundit Gopabandhu Das, a versatile freedom fighter, philosopher, poet, journalist, social worker and a nation builder born on 9th of October 1877 in the village Suando of Puri district. In the year 1909 he had begin the Satyabadi School with Pundit Nilakantha Das, Pundit Godavarish Mishra, Acharya Harihar and others. He was conferred with the title as Utkalamani (means Jewel of Utkal or Orissa) by a veteran scientist and nationalist of Bengal, Prafulla Chandra Ray on 28th of June 1924.

“Let my body mingle with the dust of this Land,
And let my countrymen walk along my back;
Let all the holes in the road of freedom be filled with my blood & bone,
And let my life be sacrificed when my people awake into freedom.”


The eternal words are written by Utkalamani Pundit Gopabandhu Das was heart touching and inspiration to the youths. The most famous creations of Utkalamani are Bandira Atmakatha, and Abakasha Chinta. 

He devoted his whole life for poverty free and a respected society, even though he lost his only son; due to which he became a model and ideal for many Kings, Rajas, Rulers and Leaders. In conjunction with Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das and other leaders he able to form a separate state for the Odians as Orissa (Odisha). In between, on 4th October 1919 he started a weekly paper ‘The Samaj’ to promote the Odia language and literature; as well as to promote and encourage the Odians to participate in his motto of creating a separate province. The maker of modern Orissa, Utkalamani Pundit Gopabandhu Das breathed last on 17th of June 1928.
