Gopalpur Port – Turning From Seasonal Port to an All-Weather Port Soon

After a long time, the Gopalpur Port at Arjipalli, Chatrapur is turning as an all-weather port from a seasonal port. As a trial basis, recently a South Korean Vessel ‘WISE SW - PANAMA’ has started its journey hauling the 7,500 Mt. Tons of rare earths (ilmenite) from IREL Plant. Very soon, some more vessels are projected to reach here for carrying the IREL products and other ingredient.

Begin in the year 1984 by Odisha’s current Chief Minister Janaki Ballav Patnaik, the shipping at Gopalpur Port was stopped from the year 2000 due to several issues. However, the new assignment was started in September 14th 2006 with the join up of Orissa Stevedors Ltd. (OSL) and Odisha Govt.

The projection of building the port was in about Rs. 1,200 crore; out of which already Rs. 850 crore were spend to turn into an all-weather port. The work is commencing very quickly that may take more a year to complete. However, as the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) and the Customs Department has given green signal to it the shipment will start very soon and continue slowly in this year, until two more multi-purpose berths are constructed.
